Nine modules.
Your own pace.

Every field in every module has been chosen because a family in crisis would need it. Not because it felt comprehensive. Because it was urgent.

Module 02

Money & Assets

The financial picture your partner would need to understand within the first week. Bank accounts, pensions, insurance policies — the information that is scattered across dozens of institutions and almost never written down in one place.

Bank accounts (add multiple)
Bank name, sort code, account type. Your partner needs to freeze accounts and claim funds.
Pension provider(s)
Pension funds don't pass automatically to family. The provider must be contacted — and your nominated beneficiary may not match what your will says.
Life insurance policies
Provider, policy number, sum assured. Claims must be made within a time limit. Missing this window has cost families thousands of pounds.
Mortgage details
Lender, account number, and whether there is mortgage protection insurance in place.
Investment accounts
ISAs, shares, funds. Many families discover investments they didn't know existed during probate.
Debts and liabilities
Creditors must be notified. Debts form part of the estate and affect what beneficiaries receive.
Crypto or digital assets
Without login instructions, digital currency and online assets are permanently lost. No bank can retrieve them.

Module 03

Digital Life

The most overlooked module. A locked phone at death is a catastrophe. Photos, banking apps, addresses, memories — all permanently inaccessible without a passcode nobody knows.

Password manager access
Which password manager. How to access the master password. Where 2FA codes come from.
Phone passcode (both phones)
The single most urgent thing a partner needs. Everything on a modern phone is inaccessible without it.
Computer / laptop password
Work files, personal documents, photos, tax records — all locked without this.
Primary email access
Email is required to reset almost every other online account. The master key of digital life.
Two-step login codes — which app or phone number receives them
Which app. Which phone number. Without this, accounts with 2FA are permanently locked.
Apple ID / Google account
Manages device access, app subscriptions, photo libraries, and Find My. Critical to recover.

PASSWORD MANAGER
1Password · Master password written in the small notebook in the fireproof safe. Emergency kit in same location.

Why this module exists
A locked phone can take months and legal proceedings to recover. This is the module users say they "never thought about" — and the one families are most grateful for when it's been completed.
Module 04

Children & Family

The hardest module to complete. The most important for parents. This is the information that gives your children stability when they need it most — written while you're here to give it.

Guardian arrangements
Who raises your children if both parents die. Have they agreed? Do they know the children?
School details
Name, address, key contact, collection procedure. A guardian needs to notify the school immediately.
Medical — GP, allergies, medications
A new carer needs this before their first day. Allergies and medications are safety-critical.
Daily routine
What a day looks like. Sleep schedule, activities, preferences. Continuity matters for young children.
Financial provisions
Junior ISA, savings accounts, trust arrangements. Who manages money until adulthood.
Trustee for children's estate
Different from a guardian. Manages financial assets until the children reach a specified age.
FIELD PREVIEW — CHILDREN MODULE
GUARDIAN IF BOTH PARENTS GONE
My sister, Rachel Thompson. She's agreed and has met with us. Contact: 07XXX XXXXXX. Address: 14 Oak Lane, Bristol.

"This is the hardest section. You don't have to fill it in all at once. But the information here — if something happened to both of you — is what would give your children stability when they need it most."

Module 05

Personal Wishes

Your preferences for what happens after you're gone. Recorded clearly, so the people making decisions in grief don't have to guess.

Burial or cremation preference
The single most common source of family conflict after a death. Your preference, clearly stated.
Funeral wishes
Type of service, location, who speaks, music choices, flowers or donations.
Organ donation
Your decision and, importantly, what you've told your family — family consent still matters in practice.
Religious considerations
Faith tradition, whether clergy should be involved, any specific rites or customs.
Who should be told, and how
People outside the immediate family. Former colleagues. Friends your partner doesn't know well.
FIELD PREVIEW — WISHES MODULE
BURIAL / CREMATION
Cremation. Ashes scattered at Loch Lomond — we talked about this.
MUSIC FOR THE SERVICE
Nick Drake — Pink Moon. Anything but Amazing Grace.

Module 06

Key People

Who to contact immediately. Who makes decisions. Who handles specific aspects of the estate. And — often just as important — who should not be involved.

First contacts (with roles)
Who to call first. Close family. Best friends. People who'd want to know before it becomes public.
Medical decision maker
Who makes healthcare decisions if you lose capacity before death. May differ from your executor.
Who should not be involved
Estrangements, difficult relationships, people whose involvement would cause harm. Recorded clearly and privately.
Financial and legal advisers
Accountant, financial planner, pension adviser — all need notifying and have time-sensitive roles.

Module 07

The House

The practical details of daily life that a surviving partner — or anyone stepping in to help — would need from day one.

Utility providers and account numbers
Gas, electric, water, broadband — each must be notified and transferred. Account numbers required.
Alarm code and provider
Security company needs to be updated. Code may need to be changed for safety.
Spare key location
Family or neighbours who hold keys. Useful immediately if your partner is away when it happens.
Vehicle details and insurance
Registration, insurer, policy number. Vehicle ownership must be transferred from the estate.
Regular contractors
Cleaner, gardener, plumber, electrician — contact details for services that need to continue or be cancelled.

Module 08

Health & Work

Medical details for emergency situations. Employer information and financial benefits that a surviving partner would need to claim quickly.

GP surgery and registration number
Medical records need to be transferred. Executor must notify the surgery.
Medications and conditions
Relevant if you become incapacitated rather than dying. Emergency responders need this.
Employer and HR contact
HR needs to be told. Final pay, any unused holiday, and the employer's family payout all need to be claimed — and someone needs to know who to call.
Employer payout if you die while employed
Often worth several times your annual salary. Frequently unclaimed because the family didn't know to ask for it.
Key work contacts
Manager, payroll, any ongoing projects that need handover. Prevents your partner having to navigate HR cold.

Module 09

Sealed Letters

Personal messages, written now, stored encrypted, waiting for the moment they're needed. Your words, preserved exactly as you wrote them. Unlocked only when the time comes.

A letter to your partner
Everything you'd want them to know. What you're grateful for. What you need them to do. Who they should lean on.
Letters to your children
One for now. One for when they're older. One for when they get married. You choose how many and when they're unlocked.
Letters to parents or siblings
Relationships are complicated. A sealed letter gives you the space to say what you might never have said out loud.
A message for anyone who needs it
Unlimited recipients. No format requirements. A simple text editor. Your words, nothing else.

A note on writing letters
The letter screen in Sudden is intentionally simple. A plain editor. No formatting. No distractions. This is not a form to be completed — it is a page to write on. There is no right way to do it.
Designed for real brains

Built for people who've been meaning to sort this.

Most estate planning tools were designed for people who find admin easy. Sudden was designed for everyone else. Every UX decision is made with one question: what makes it easiest to actually finish?

Micro-steps, not marathons
"Add one contact." "Record one password." "Write one sentence." Small wins build momentum and your score goes up immediately — no need to do it all at once.
Conversation, not forms
Each field tells you why it matters before asking for the answer. Less cognitive load. Less avoidance. More completion.
Auto-save, always
Close the app mid-sentence. Come back three weeks later. Your progress is exactly where you left it. A half-finished vault is infinitely better than no vault.
Shame-free re-entry
Come back after six months and Sudden doesn't shame you for it. "Welcome back. No pressure. Let's just do one small thing." There is no streak to break.
Complete it together
Partner mode lets two people work through the vault together — watching each other's progress, prompting each other to fill gaps. Social accountability is one of the most powerful completion tools.
Life event prompts
New job? New baby? Moving house? Sudden sends a gentle nudge to update the relevant sections automatically — no separate "admin day" required.
"This app holds your life admin so your brain doesn't have to."
