The agreement
These Terms of Use are a legal agreement between you and Sudden Ltd (“Sudden”, “we”, “us”), a company registered in England & Wales, covering your use of the Sudden mobile app and the sudden-app.com website (together, the “service”).
By creating an account or using the service you accept these terms. If you do not agree with them, please do not use the service. Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle your data and forms part of this agreement.
You must be at least 18 years old to use Sudden.
The service
Sudden lets you store personal, financial, legal, and practical information in an encrypted vault so that people you trust can act on it when they need to. Features vary by plan and may include document attachments, on-device vault search, partner sharing, and PDF export.
We are always improving Sudden. We may add, change, or remove features, and we will give reasonable notice of any change that materially reduces what a paid plan includes.
England & Wales only. The guidance and checklists in Sudden are written for England & Wales. Laws in Scotland, Northern Ireland, and other countries differ.
Your account & vault
You are responsible for keeping your login details and your device secure, and for the accuracy of the information you store. Tell us straight away at support@sudden-app.com if you believe your account has been compromised.
Your password is your key — we cannot recover your vault. Sudden uses zero-knowledge encryption: your vault is encrypted on your device with a key derived from your password, and we never receive either. If you forget your password and reset it, the contents of your vault cannot be decrypted and will be lost. There is no back door, even for us.
You can delete your account and all associated data at any time from Settings → Delete account in the app, or by following the steps at sudden-app.com/delete-account.
Subscriptions & billing
Sudden offers a free plan and paid subscriptions (Core, Plus, and Professional), billed monthly or annually. Current prices are shown in the app and on our pricing page before you pay.
- Buying in the app — payment is taken by Apple (App Store) or Google (Play Store) through your store account. Subscriptions renew automatically unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Manage or cancel in your App Store or Play Store subscription settings; refunds for store purchases are handled by Apple or Google under their policies.
- Buying on our website — payment is processed by Stripe. Subscribe with the same email address as your Sudden account so your plan activates in the app. Renewals are automatic; you can cancel any time before renewal by contacting support@sudden-app.com, and cancellation takes effect at the end of the paid period.
- Statutory rights — if you buy on our website as a UK consumer you have a 14-day cooling-off right. By activating a paid plan immediately you agree we may begin supplying the service during that period; if you cancel within it, we may deduct an amount proportionate to the service already supplied.
If a subscription lapses or is cancelled, your vault data remains stored and readable on your free plan — you only lose access to paid features.
Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- use the service to store or share unlawful material, or material belonging to someone else without their permission;
- attempt to gain unauthorised access to other users' accounts or vaults, or to our systems;
- reverse engineer, copy, resell, or interfere with the operation of the service, except as the law allows;
- use the service to harass, defraud, or harm anyone.
We may suspend or close accounts that break these rules, giving notice where it is reasonable to do so.
Your content
Everything you store in your vault belongs to you. Because it is encrypted before it leaves your device, we cannot read it, and we claim no rights over it beyond what is technically necessary to store and return the encrypted data to you.
If you choose to share fields with a trusted partner through the app, you are responsible for deciding what to share and with whom.
Disclaimers
Guidance, examples, checklists, and emergency information in Sudden are general information for England & Wales, provided in good faith. They are not legal, financial, tax, or medical advice. Always take professional advice for decisions such as making a will, appointing attorneys, or administering an estate.
We work hard to keep Sudden available and reliable, but we cannot promise the service will be uninterrupted or error-free. Keep independent copies of documents that matter — the original of a will, for example, must be kept physically in any case.
Liability
Nothing in these terms excludes or limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot be excluded under the law of England & Wales. Nothing in these terms affects your statutory rights as a consumer.
Subject to that, we are not liable for losses that were not foreseeable when you accepted these terms, losses caused by events outside our reasonable control, or loss of vault data caused by a forgotten password (see section 3). Our total liability to you is limited to the amount you paid us for the service in the 12 months before the claim arose.
Ending the agreement
You can stop using Sudden at any time and delete your account in the app or via sudden-app.com/delete-account. Deletion is permanent — your vault, attachments, and account are erased and cannot be recovered.
We may end this agreement with reasonable notice if we withdraw the service, or without notice if you seriously or repeatedly break these terms. If we withdraw the service we will give you a reasonable opportunity to export your data first.
General terms
- These terms are governed by the law of England & Wales, and the courts of England & Wales have jurisdiction (if you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland you may also bring proceedings there).
- We may update these terms from time to time. For material changes we will give you notice by email or in the app before they take effect; continuing to use the service after that means you accept the updated terms.
- If any part of these terms is found unenforceable, the rest still applies.
- If your app was downloaded from the App Store or Play Store, Apple's or Google's standard terms also apply to the download itself; Apple and Google are not responsible for the service and are third-party beneficiaries of this section only.
